12:17 pm - Street Pastors
There has been some negative publicity about Street Pastors this week. For a summary of the debate and what, exactly, Street Pastors do and don't do, there is an excellent blog here.

Our church supports Street Pastors, and several of our members have trained or are training as Street Pastors. They are wonderful people, not out to proselytise, but to show love in a practical way, perhaps in a way people least expect, without any agenda except to live and love as we believe Jesus has taught us. It is emphatically NOT "evangelism," ie setting out with the purpose of preaching to all and sundry and asking them to change their lives or beliefs; rather I would say it is an example of Augustine's exhortation to "Preach the Gospel at all times. Where necessary, use words."

Funniest thing I've seen all day? Happy "atheist bus" children are Christians (or children of Christians, at any rate). Cracked me up.

6:09 pm - Half Term
Half term week was spent doing wedding shopping! We had a plan and everything, and therefore Stuff Got Done. It all seems a bit weird and real now :)

8:23 pm - All Hallows' Eve
If you know of any children (or more to the point, their parents) who would like a non-occult way to have fun on 31st October, our church is having a party 5:30-7:30 on Saturday. I unfortunately can't be there, but please please send along any kids you think would enjoy a party! Costumes welcome, lots of fun and games planned!

11:03 am - In which pride comes before a fall (but the resulting time to read is very much appreciated)
I was beginning to feel inwardly smug about having not succumbed to any of the various lurgy my pupils have been carrying. It is surely just desserts for having been so cocky that means I now have a cough. The cough itself is tiny, almost inconsequential, barely worth talking about, but has the unfortunate side effect of having made my throat go red and a bit numb. So I'm taking a morning off work (possibly the whole day, I'm not sure yet), talking as little as possible, and expecting that this early caution will let me get back to work tomorrow!

In the meantime, I have finished a book my future MiL lent me, Plain Truth, which had a good twist at the end. Mind you, I say it was a good twist but I'm really quite gullible and tend not to see what's coming in books so maybe don't take my word for it. Next up is Gloriana's Torch, which I picked up in the summer at the loveliest secondhand bookshop in the world, Barter Books. I love most things set in the Tudor period, and of course adore Philippa Gregory's books but there are only so many of those, and I've already got them! I'm also picking back up The Challenge of Jesus - I'm starting to need something mildly intellectual to get my teeth into again. Finally, I'm using this month's Bible notes from church, Just Give me Jesus, written by one of our ministers, Julia. I find it quite a struggle to stick to something as disciplined as Bible study every day, but after a short catch-up at the beginning of the month, I'm now really enjoying the (short) passage and (short!) reflection as I start my day.

10:53 pm - Nothing much but hello anyway :)
Been busy, just with life, wedding, work etc... Mum and I saw Cliff and the Shadows last week, which was IMMENSE. And now I'm watching him on telly, which is great :) It was just ridiculously exciting seeing him LIVE!! and singing along, and being ridiculously stunned by how young he looks. Oh, and the Shadows too - Hank Marvin just making that guitar sing! I enjoyed the instrumental sets as much as hearing Cliff's beautiful voice. Mum and I just had the best time :D

Also (so I don't write about Cliff more than my beloved), [info]ajmnewma has written a good post about grumbling...!

Big party today at Crystal Palace Park to celebrate 100 Years of Guiding! Read more about the history here. I'm slightly daunted by the prospect of looking after 15 Brownies at such a huge event, but I hope I'll be ok. What's really exciting is that our launch party is the one at Crystal Palace Park, where it all began in 1909.

Greenbelt was good. We heard some good talks, participated in some lovely worship of many guises, had fun with some comedy and really good times catching up with our friends. I feel very blessed and strengthened at a time when that is exactly what I need. Greenbelt is such a beautiful thing to be part of, such a wide and joyful community and expression of God's love. I am so grateful for it and never more so than now.

6:41 pm - Sorry ...
We have been SOOO busy! The end of term was exams, rehearsals and concerts. Now term's over, but we've exchanged on our flat and are completing on TUESDAY!!! Very exciting. My cousin got married on Saturday, and we've been going to lots of the Proms, which is an indulgence we may not be able to afford quite so much next year! This Sunday I'm playing at another church, so I've been practicing hard, and then in the evening I'm preaching at Elm Road on Psalm 107, so despite not being at work this week I'm still rushing around like a mad thing - in a deeply contemplative manner, of course. But it's good that so many wonderful things are happening for us so, despite the odd teary moments of "ARGH TOO MUCH TOO MUCH!!!" it's lovely to be able to see such obvious blessings in our lives :)

PS: I tweet much more often than I post here ... but you'll need an account to read my entries which are protected!

Bishop Alan posted about Wordles the other day. I've decided to start making Wordles of Biblical texts. Here's the first offering, a fairly famous text:

Wordle: Psalm 23

5:24 pm
Maggi posted this lovely poem:

They tuck you up, your mum and dad
They read you Peter Rabbit, too.
They give you all the treats they had
And add some extra, just for you.

They were tucked up when they were small,
(Pink perfume, blue tobacco-smoke),
By those whose kiss healed any fall,
Whose laughter doubled any joke.

Man hands on happiness to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
So love your parents all you can
And have some cheerful kids yourself.

Adrian Mitchell

Isn't that a nice reinterpretation of Larkin's famous rant? On a dark day for UK politics, it's good to be reminded of everyday beauty like this.
