We're currently doing a series on Sunday evenings about the Seven Deadly Sins. The other week, I spoke on anger.

10:42 am - Evening Service, 15th August 2010
|
ajmnewma and I led the service at church last night. Behind the cut is a record of what we did. I found that as I was preaching my (short) sermon I kept noticing how badly structured it was and how many points I probably could have made better, so I crave your pardon for the scrappy bits of that - I have resisted the temptation to rewrite the whole thing before posting! What I found most interesting was encouraging those members of our band who don't usually sing (and definitely not classical) to have a go at a hymn, a Taize chant and Gregorian chant - and they really did well.

9:06 pm - Reading, not writing
|
I've not written much for a long time now. I seem not to have very much of interest to say - or lack the means, time or inclination to put my nebulous thoughts into words. So I thought I'd just share a few blog posts that have provoked thoughts in the last couple of days. Please note this is one of my public posts, so you might want to bear that in mind if you post comments. Anyway, interesting links:
ASBO Jesus asks What is this Wilderness?. (Short cartoon.)
Sophia Network constantly challenges me to think about the shape of society, particularly in relation to how it views, shapes and treats women. I'm not sure I enjoyed it, but Working with girls has given me food for thought; having read the review of Living Dolls I may have to read that, too.
On a more positive note, Chris Erdman's blog has been stimulating for my mind and soul. I loved the comparison of the ego to a naughty child. But I was really struck by Prayer of the Heart: Letting Go and have been reading and rereading it to really try and absorb it.
Reading back on Subversive Influence, I came across this beautiful Blessing of Hands, which I will hopefully use in a service soon. Isn't it lovely?

12:21 pm - Broken World
|
"We live in a world that's broken in the sense that a very large part of our world, notably, Africa, feels, with a good deal of justification, that the rest of the world has more or less stopped thinking about it, in terms of positive investment. In a sense that is brokenness where one sector of the human family says, we don't believe that the rest of you have any investment in what happens to us. That's real brokenness."

As the Chilcott Inquiry into the Iraq Invasion continues, Alastair Campbell has made some interesting comments about the Bible. Church Mouse adds some thoughts on the matter.

2:09 pm - A bit of snow!!
|
This was the scene from my bedroom window this morning:

Unfortunately as I have an annoying headache that refuses to go away, I'm not really getting the full benefit of the glorious weather (particularly as bright light = urgh. But still - SNOW![/end whinge]
And a quick reminder: Carol Service, Beckenham Baptist Church, 6:30pm Sunday. Followed by refreshments, and then back to our flat for further refreshments :) Email or text if you'd like more details.
